Actor Checklist Elizabethan and Shakespearean Style

  • Voice: Clear articulation; well projected; varied; slightly elevated tone.

  • Movement: Full and fluid; appropriate to character; slightly elevated but natural and comfortable; highly selective for tragedy; free and spontaneous for comedy; presentational delivery generally used in soliloquy and aside; representational mode dominates slightly in both tragedy and comedy.

  • Gestures Use of full body; clear, fluid, and appropriate; slightly elevated; highly selective in tragedy; flexible in comedy.

  • Pantomimic Dramatization:Clear, appropriate; use of hand and costume props, particularly in comedy; highly selective for tragedy; highly inventive for comedy.

  • Character: Truthful and believable; clear; empathic, if appropriate; appropriate dimension

  • Emotion: Complex and multidimensional; clear; disciplined; rooted in human psychology.

  • Ideas: Complex and clear; rooted in Renaissance and Elizabethan social, philosophical, and theological thought; effectively theatricalized.

  • Language:Often unusual vocabulary; clear and understandable; iambic pentameter rhythmically intact with interpretative freedom permitted; correct pronunciation; lyrical and musical when intended.

  • Pace and Tempo: Varied; rhythmic; disciplined.   

  • Special Techniques:  Specialized dancing and singing depending on context; specialized musical instruments when required; language requires unusual vocal dexterity; unusual attention to movement in costume.
